Automotive & EV sector in the UK

HENOC sector focus

Automotive & EV

Showroom, workshop and charging load on one connection.

Dealerships, body shops and charging network operators are moving from modest commercial demand to genuinely heavy electrical load. Rapid chargers change the metering and capacity question entirely: a site that ran comfortably on a small supply can need half-hourly metering, a capacity increase, or a new connection. We handle the contract and the connection side together.

Typical supply

HH electricity where charging or paint plant is installed, NHH at smaller workshops, gas for space heating

Load shape

Trading-hours base load plus sharp, unpredictable charging peaks

Main cost drivers

Capacity charges, DUoS red-band consumption, paint booths and compressors, charger utilisation

What makes automotive & ev different

Chargers force the metering question

Adding rapid charging typically pushes a site over the threshold where half-hourly metering and a capacity review become unavoidable.

Utilisation risk for network operators

Charging revenue is per-kWh delivered while much of the cost is fixed capacity. Low utilisation makes standing and capacity charges the dominant cost.

Red-band exposure

Public charging demand peaks in exactly the hours distribution charges are highest, unless pricing steers users elsewhere.

Paint and compressed air

Spray booths, ovens and compressors create short high-demand bursts that inflate peak charges disproportionately.

How we work with automotive & ev clients

Contract sized to the new load

Pricing built on the profile you will have after chargers are live, not the one you have today.

Capacity and connection managed

Where headroom is short, we run the capacity increase or new connection application through our de-risking division.

Tariff and time-band modelling

We model the cost of charging by time band so pricing and scheduling decisions are made with numbers.

Group procurement

Multi-franchise groups tendered as one portfolio rather than site by site.

Common things we find

  • Chargers commissioned before agreed capacity is confirmed
  • Charging revenue modelled without red-band distribution costs
  • Workshop and showroom supplies on separate contracts at the same site

Findings vary by client and site. Nothing here is a guarantee of saving — we quote against your own bills, and where we quote savings our clients average around 15%.
